This
lecture looks at two aspects of travel photography. Firstly it deals with
the specialist photographic tour business and what is involved with such
ventures. Secondly it details travel images that are not only suitable for
libraries but also have the potential to sale in their own right.
Roger Reynolds has been an international traveller and photographer for more than 20 years and for the last ten years has operated in partnership Photoventures, a specialist photographic tour business. Photoventures cliental are those travel photographers who does not want the hassle of organising or undertaking the extensive research required for a successful photographic tour. With the emphasis being mainly on the USA due to its ease of travel,
excellent facilities and having some of the greatest photographic
destinations on the planet, Photoventures has sought to offer a wide
variety of locations and photographic opportunities. These include such
well-known and spectacular locations Photoventures also visits many other interesting locations outside of the USA and these include the Indian Sub Continent, South America and China to name but a few. This aspect of the lecture will deal with the planning as well as offering images to illustrate to our clients what they can expect from a particular tour. The imagery is an important factor because these can tempt our potential clients into joining a tour in order to emulate such photographic opportunities. The quality of the image is one of the most important factors in drawing in a potential client allowing them to appreciate the experience they will have on a particular tour. The second part of the tour will deal with selling to agencies and how to get different and commercial images. These images will demonstrate that it is important to go beyond just the façade of a location and photograph images that have more than purpose. A record of a location will be useful to illustrate a guidebook, however a great pictorial image of a location can serve many more purposes and can sell on its visual enjoyment alone.` The talk will be illustrated with many images from around the worlds intended to not only stimulate the viewer but also allow them to take a glimpse at some of the great locations the photographer has visited and recorded.Biography I began my interest in photography in1975 and used it as a means of relaxation to escape the stress of my work in the Police Service. However it was not long before that interest became an all consuming passion and the rest they say is history. My early years were spent as an amateur photographer, enjoying club and exhibition work. Having joined a local Photographic Society in Richmond I was soon to learn how high the standards were in Amateur photography. With such members as Dr Jouhar, George Bunzl, Peter Wilkinson (Of the Wilkinson Processor fame) and Nobby Fry to name just a few of an illustrious list I had great opportunities to learn from my peers. They also encourage me that the distinctions of the Royal Photographic Society were immense goals to test ones ability as a photographer. I followed their advice and in 1984 I was awarded two Associates of the Royal Photographic Society for a submission in Pictorial Slides and a second for a submission in Pictorial prints. In 1986 I was awarded the Fellowship with a Colour print submission in the Applied Section. In 2000 I was awarded a second Fellowship for a colour print submission in the Visual Arts category, In October 2003 I was awarded The Royal Photographic Society’s highest honour the Honorary Fellowship (Hon FRPS) in recognition as President of The Society. In 1996 I received for the Meritorious Service Award (APAGB) form the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. In 1997 I gained an Associate of the British Photographic Exhibitions (ABPE). In 1999 I gained the first ever Fellowship of the British Photographic Exhibitions (FBPE). I was Awarded The Fellowship of British Professional Photographers Association (FBPPA) in 2003 I have always been a prolific supporter of exhibitions at venues all over the world and to date have had over 3,000 acceptance at national and International exhibitions. In addition to extensive acceptance in the United Kingdom and Europe my work has been exhibited in exhibitions as far as China, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, India, Australia, Canada and the USA. In 1987 I won the best exhibit in the Condor International Bird Competition. In 1990 I had two of the 12 images accepted in the first Canon Calendar. My work has been regularly published in the Photography Year Book including the front cover of the 1990 edition. My images have to illustrate many publications. I have also had reproductions in numerous photographic magazines including Photo Technique and Practical Photography. I am the current chairman of the Royal Photographic Society Associate and Fellowship Distinction Panel in Nature photography and have also served as Chairman for the Travel Panels and as a member of the Applied and Professional panel. I served on the Council of the Royal Photographic Society for more than 10 years and was actively involved in the partnering negotiations with NMPFT at Bradford. I served as President of The Royal Photographic Society from 2003-2005. I with my wife, son and daughter had the only family exhibition ever held at Royal Photographic Society Gallery at The Octagon, Bath and have been privileged to have other exhibitions including one at Dimbola Lodge home to the Julia Margaret Cameron Trust. I have lectured extensively in the United Kingdom as well as in the USA, India, and Europe. I delivered a lecture at the 2005 PSA Convention in Salt Lake and the NECC Conference in Massachusetts in 2006
Whilst me photographic interests are very varied and include Nature, landscape, environmental portraits and sport photography, it is travel photography that consumes the major part of my time. I have owned and operated in partnership Photoventures, a specialist photographic travel company. This is now in its tenth year of operation and offers tailor made photographic tours to some of the best locations on the planet. Using my extensive travel and photographic experience I am able to take the hassle out of photography abroad. It also gives me an opportunity to indulge my greatest photographic passion, travel photography. Whilst it can be an immensely stressful business it can give also give immense satisfaction when one views the result achieved by the customers on their return. Perhaps the testament to this is to see these result inspire others want to emulate those great images that have been taken on a Photoventures tour. |
