Paul
GallagherPaul Gallagher has been a fine art black and white landscape
photographer for over 20 years, dedicating his photography to Northern
England and the Scottish Highlands and photographing solely in medium
and large format. He began his photographic career studying graphic and
photography at Southport College of Fine Arts in Lancashire, England
from which he gained a distinction in photography. This led him to work
professionally at a commercial studio in Liverpool. Some years later
Paul was invited to return to teach photography part-time at Southport
College. He has been awarded an Associate from the Royal Photographic
Society.
Recently Paul traded the dark room for the use of digital production of
the fine art print. Paul’s techniques are very traditional in the field
and he is adept in the use of the 5x4 view camera and the Zone System.
The negatives are then scanned to produce high grade files and the
darkroom work is now achieved digitally.
Paul is a regular keynote speaker to Photographic Societies throughout
the North West of England regarding his work and techniques in both the
use of large format equipment and fine art digital monochrome print
production. He has recently been commissioned by the Environment Agency
to photograph the regenerated landscapes of NW England’s industrial belt
and he has also been commissioned by the BBC to photograph Glen Coe,
Scotland.
Paul has been asked to write about his techniques, approach and the use
of large format equipment and digital image production. He has had
several articles published in national photographic publications. He has
been featured in Best of Friends book published by Arem publishing and
will be again in 2006. He was awarded the Bronze award for his Boat at
Ardfern image and Arem Publishing is considered to be the selected
excellence of monochrome workers from around the world. He is currently
exhibiting and selling his work in seventeen galleries in the UK. He is
in the process of completing his first book on monochrome photography
which will be published in Autumn 2008.
Today Paul feels even stronger about his photography. He feels compelled
to photograph and collect images; it is a way of life for him now. He
finds himself constantly watching the light changing and visualizing
pictures. Photography is intuitive to him. It is an intense relationship
with the subject that drives Paul to seek out more of the infinite
combination of subject and light. If he visualizes something that he
feels is exceptional or unique then its’ capture is vital before the
opportunity is missed.
Paul Gallagher has an Exhibition here.
