Athol Abrahams has an Exhibition here. Athol Abrahams is an experienced Photographer specialising in Weddings, Portraits and Agency work. His passion for photography creates exceptional results, and his ability to "capture the essence of the moment" artistically delivers memorable images with emotional depth. Every picture demonstrates a desire to move the audience and evoke emotion. Type business: Semi Professional My photographic style.: I tend to adjust my style according to the client brief. My preferred style is reportage, but I do enjoy some of the more traditional forms of photography. My greatest strengths.: Attention to detail, and the ability to relax the clients sufficiently to get the most natural images. Detail is everything, not capturing that tearful moment, or that affectionate glance, is just not good enough. I have been in photography: I have been doing photography for around 20 years, and in years gone by I printed my own film images in my darkroom. More recently I have become quite passionate about social photography, and find the privilege of sharing intimacy, as a photographer does with their clients, totally heart-warming. How I got started in photography: Years ago I had a relative who was a serious hobbyist, and I looked at some of his work and thought, "I'd like to do that", and so I did. I grew up in South Africa, so wildlife featured heavily in my work, and it taught patience! A lot of what I did initially was quite abstract as I am passionate about photography as an art form, but abstract does not generally pay for increasingly expensive photographic technology, so I went more mainstream. My photographic skills: Staying calm under pressure is imperative. Weddings throw a lot of surprises at you, so you have to be prepared for anything, and not miss each vital opportunity to create beautiful images. I love detail, from tears, to flowers, shoes, laughter, cards, gifts, reflections and so on. Even at the most basic function, there is no shortage of material, and perhaps this is where I can be most creative. My personality: Determined, and a perfectionist. I am a bit "all or nothing", and set terribly high standards. It's fantastic for my clients, but I add a good deal of pressure to myself as a result, and I find it hard to consider myself satisfied. I have to keep learning, and experimenting, and creating, and refuse to accept mediocrity. Geographic areas I cover.: Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, and for the right function, will do throughout UK. Venues I frequently attend: I love old houses, and dedicated venues with well manicured gardens and lots of colour. Old, well lit Churches are beautiful, St Mary's in Horsham is a favourite, and venues like Ghyll Manor in Rusper always inspire creativity. I found inspiration from: It's the feedback. The other day I had a client call me in tears, having just received her pictures, thanking me for capturing her day so emotively. The process of capturing moments of time in a creative and special way allows me to participate in recording history. That's powerful. Success in photography: I don't really enter competitions, strangely they don't inspire me. Photographic training: I have done some specific training and Masterclasses, but I am largely self taught. In some ways I think it helps, as I am quite compliant technically, and extensive formal training is likely to have forced me to concentrate on the technical rather than emotional. For many it works, for me I think it would be constraining. My interests outside photography: Travel, Martial Arts. Major events.: There have been many, and each one binds with me and creates the character I am today. I remember doing photojournalism for a newspaper in South Africa, during Apartheid. The camera provided me with an amazing view of the resilience and courage of the Country's people, and some insight into human behaviour. There were times I wished everyone looked at life through a lens, it doesn't lie. Testimonials: There are many, and some are listed on my website. They are my inspiration. Why I like the SWPP BPPA: It's about being part of a community with similar interests. It gives you opportunity to learn, and share. Both are important. Tagline: It's not worth doing if it's not done properly. Future plans: For now, enjoy photography, build my portfolio further, and be able to select my assignments. In a few years, perhaps LSWPP, ARPS, and more of my images in print.
