West LothianDuncan AstburyAstbury Photography 31 Academy Road Bo'ness West Lothian EH51 9QD Scotland tel:- 07834 772172 web address:- photography.astbury.org/ blog:- astbury.blogspot.com/ e-mail:- Duncan Astbury Specialist Photographer for :- Wedding photography Babies Children Portrait photography Pets Fine art photos Other wedding photographic services Civil Religious weddings Duncan is also a member of SINWP Type business: Full Time Professional Photographer My photographic style: I like to draw upon traditional elements such as black and white photography, and at the other extreme to use punchy colours reminiscent of old style transparencies, but to try and deliver in a fresh and contemporary way. My greatest strengths: A desire to get things right, to give attention to detail and to seek continuous improvement, hopefully to deliver the best possible experience for the client. I try to be straightforward in all my dealings and demonstrate integrity at all times. I have been in photography: I have been taking photographs for some 30 years now, during which time I have progressed from it being a personal passion to something which is of commercial quality. How I got started in photography: My interest in photography started as a child when my grandfather gave me one of his old 35mm film cameras, a Voigtlander Vito B, dating from 1958. This completely manual camera gave me a good grounding in the basics and experience of judging exposure settings. My photographic skills: With a technical background, having graduate and postgraduate IT qualifications, it makes for a natural affinity with the world of digital imaging. My personality: Behind the scenes I like to be well briefed and prepared and with contingency plans for shooting where possible. Externally I like to present things in as relaxed a manner as possible and to maintain a sense of humour and perspective. Geographic areas I cover: I am based on Bo'ness, conveniently located on the Forth between Edinburgh and Stirling and can travel outside my local area to cover central Scotland and possibly further. Venues I frequently attend: I don't have any regular favourite venues but instead always enjoy discovering new places from the variety of locations that are available. I found inspiration from: Photographically I have enjoyed images ranging from the Victorian Roger Fenton through to the more modern influences of Larry Sultan. Success in photography: Every time I have a happy client I feel a measure of success. Competitive successes have included a total of 4 Silvers in the SWPP monthly members' competition. Photographic training: I have been studying with the Open College of the Arts since 2008 on a modular programme, currently enjoying my third course and with the option to complete a photographic degree over the next few years. My interests outside photography: My love of Scottish landscapes and walking combine in the pastime of Geocaching. I also enjoy sailing in the summer months. My home is shared with a Siamese cat. Testimonials: "Astbury photography went out of their way to take pictures of my vehicles at Prestige Cars for my wedding car hire company based in Central Scotland. Astbury Photograph have helped to enhanced my business profile with the excellent photographs of my vehicles. It was excellent value for the money." James Morrison, Prestige Cars "Astbury Photography carried out a commission to provide a photographic record of our historic motor racing event. The quality and variety of the work was excellent and the range and standard of the images provided was superb." Kenny Baird, BHCR "Duncan kindly allowed the Open College of the Arts to make use of a few of his stunning images within the new edition of the college's Creative Writing course. We are delighted to have enhanced the course with Duncan's images as well as other excellent photos produced by OCA photography students." Jane Horton, Curriculum Director, The Open College of the Arts Why I like the SWPP: Within the SWPP there is a great sense of community amongst the members. This manifests itself in many ways, for example, the helpful and quality responses that are received whenever a question is posted to the members forum. Tagline: Social photography in Scotland. Future plans: To eventually retire to a remote part of Scotland and run photography courses for those sharing my passion for the people and landscape. And finally: Before turning my attention to photography full time I had a career of some 20 years in the IT industry, working as a project manager. This has allowed me to develop strong organisational and planning skills.
