Having grown up around film cameras and the agonising and sometimes frustrating waits that went with traditional darkroom developing, he has been completely rejuvenated with the advent of digital photography. Whilst still the proud owner of several film cameras, you will normally find him working with the latest digital equipment and the specialist lenses that are now available for this medium. When not covering weddings and events, Michael is a keen exhibitor on both the UK and international photographic salon circuits and is an award winning exhibitor at this level. With the demise of the darkroom, came the Lightroom. Effectively we now develop our images on the computer. Michael is highly experienced and knowledgeable in the use of the Adobe Photoshop digital editing suite, thus allowing him to bring out the very best in each and every photograph he works on, for that all important maximum 'WOW' factor! All commissions received by Michael are treated as an honour and a privilege to undertake and he is constantly striving to ensure he brings you the very best in wedding, portrait and event photography. Semi Professional Photographer My photographic style: I love photographing people. It matters not a jot whether it is a wedding or a someone at work. When taking pictures for my own pleasure, my style tends to be slightly dark and edgy with lots of contrast and mood. Weddings tend towards a journalist style with elements of contemporary and traditional depending upon the couples personalities and wishes. Portraits are wide ranging, but again, given the choice I like to experiment with dramatic lighting. My greatest strengths: I have a confident but friendly personality an I find it easy to make people relax and feel comfortable with themselves. Most importantly, I make them enjoy a shoot, even if they are naturally reserved or nervous. I have been in photography: I bought my first 35mm range finder camera when I was 14 ........ 34 years ago! How I got started in photography: I used to travel around the country primarily to photograph the railways of Britain. With the advent of digital, I found my enthusiasm rekindled, not just for transport photography, but also photographing people. Professionally, I did my first wedding 5 years ago (with some trepidation) but thoroughly enjoyed it and haven't looked back since. Every wedding gives me a buzz and I love it! My photographic skills: I consider my ability to make subjects relax and enjoy their shoot as a great asset and my ability to keep control of that shoot an important skill. From a technical point of view, I am fully conversant with exposure settings and how they interact with each other (shutter, aperture, iso) and I can quickly recognise and compensate for lighting which may easily fool a camera light meter. I am happy using flash in all situations and understand how to manipulate and control the balance between natural and artificial light. I would describe my Photoshop editing skills as advanced, although you never stop learning new things when using Photoshop. My personality: Confident, friendly, quick thinking and sometimes impulsive. Conscientious and thoughtful. Most definitely honest and respectful. Geographic areas I cover: All of the UK, but most work originates in Devon and Cornwall as well as Surrey and the Home Counties. Venues I frequently attend: Anywhere that has character. I found inspiration from: Gils Elvgren, National Geographic, The stunning work on Deviant Art website, Erwin Olaf Success in photography: I am a BPE 1* ribbon holder and am currently half way to my BPE 2*. I have medals from several FIAP salons including the Great British Small Print Circuit. I really should apply to the PAGB for my AFIAP accreditation which I am eligible for. I have also won a ribbon from the WCPF for a portrait I entered in the mono print section. Photographic training: Totally self taught. My interests outside photography: Steam Railways, Motorcycles, Music Major Testimonials: Wonderful man and a honour to have as our wedding photographer. Made such an effort to ensure we had the best possible pictures including going for a trial shoot and looking round hotel to help him with angles for shots prior to the wedding day. He's very friendly and many of my guest said it was nice to see a friendly and happy photographer who wasn't pushy just polite at all times. Why I like the SWPP: Pro active and inclusive. The magazine is excellent. Membership fees are reasonable. Future plans: I am continually striving to build the photographic business and would like it to be able to replace my current career in the transport sector at some point in the (near) future.
