Portrait photography

Type business: Semi Professional Photographer

My photographic style: Photographic style is a very difficult thing to put into words. I cut my photographic teeth on sports and journalism, so that's a big influence on the images I create. I try and capture the immediacy and essence of being in the photograph with the subject. The polar opposite of that is the traditional wedding portraiture, both of the happy couple and their guests.

My greatest strengths: I have an ability to react and adapt to any situation and capture it.

I have been in photography: I got my first box brownie (kids, ask your parents) in the seventies, so that's getting on for forty years on and off. It was in the 80's that it really clicked (sorry) for me.

How I got started in photography: The aforementioned box brownie and motorsport. A real technical test!

My photographic skills: Adaptability and reaction I've already mentioned. Add that to a vision and willingness to attempt almost any shot. Once the 'banker' is in the bag, though!

My personality: A bit left field sometimes. I'm accused of being the quiet one to watch out for. Approachable and friendly at the same time, though.

Geographic areas I cover: Shropshire, Cheshire. Some areas of Staffordshire and North Wales. Also the Reading area currently.

Venues I frequently attend: You can't beat a traditional Norman Church in a country village. Traditional Manor style house hotels are hard to beat, too. Not a fan of red-brick venues.

I found inspiration from: Inspiration is all around us. We just need to see it. So many people look but don't see.

Success in photography: Published photos as a teenager - mentoring from some of the best in their field (look at Martin Holmes and Les Kolczak for motorsport)

Photographic training: Training and education is always a difficult one when all you have is 30 years worth of photographs...

My interests outside photography: Motorsport is a biggie, as well as rugby (union, of course). And I've recently taken up golf much to the amusement of friends and family.

Major events: My own wedding (along with my lovely wife), some 14 years ago now.

Future plans: Continue with photography for the medium term, learning all the time…
