Specialist Photographer for :-

Type business: Full Time Professional Photographer

My photographic style: Casual and laid back, but with great attention to detail.

My greatest strengths: I seem to have the ability to make anyone comfortable in front of the camera, whether I'm shooting business or boudoir. Many of my clients have said they trusted me more than any other photographer. I have no particular professional ego beyond getting the job done to everyone's satisfaction.

I have been in photography: All of my life.

How I got started in photography: When I was in eighth grade my Dad gave me the Brownie Darkroom Kit he'd had when he was a young man. I made a contact print in a darkened coat closet for a grade school science project and was immediately hooked. I shot my first wedding, graduation portrait, advertising job and figure study at age 14. I got my first job at age 15 at the local camera shop and was the school photographer, the geek in everyone's face, all through high school (I'm so glad they let me live).

My photographic skills: I can light anything and make anyone look terrific.

My personality: Easy going, humorous, generous. Idiot when necessary.

Geographic areas I cover: Anywhere a client will pay me to be. I love to travel.

Venues I frequently attend: It's rare for me to be in a venue that I don't like.

I found inspiration from: As a young photographer I was inspired by the usual suspects, Philippe Halsmann and Richard Avedon in particular. I was most inspired by Tom McCarthy, one of the most prolific stock photographers of my time and one who was written about in numerous Popular Photography articles. I had the pleasure of meeting and becoming friends with Tom and his wife, DeeAnn, years after reading about him. He is mostly retired now, but continues to inspire me with his drive and love of his craft.

Artistically, I'm inspired by the nude, ballet and heavy trucks. Go figure.

Success in photography: I don't keep track, but a few that come to mind are: Three Nikon Certificates of Excellence, an International Broadcast Advertisers and Producers award, A Gold for a stock photography shot from a magazine I can't remember the name of, a Silver for a TV commercial I directed for Lexus, and others. My fine art work has been exhibited and sold in numerous art galleries over the years.

Photographic training: I've taken many workshops and attended many lectures over the years, but when I was getting started there were few schools for photography. Much of what I've learned came from conversations with professional photographers when I was working at the camera shop, but they were all portrait photographers. My commercial experience and knowledge is largely self-acquired, the result of listening to clients and producing what they needed.

My interests outside photography...: I love to read, but have little time for it unless I'm on vacation. When I'm relaxing I will sit back and read a book every other day. I really enjoy pool and would enjoy learning Snooker (something we don't typically play here in the States). The last time I was at SWPP I faithfully watched the Snooker tournament in my hotel room every night it was broadcast. I also enjoy a good cigar while playing golf or with a pint of ale or a single malt scotch while watching the world go by.

Major events: The birth of our daughter, Elizabeth, in 1989. She's an extraordinary woman in so many ways (and beats us both in smarts).

Testimonials: I've got lots, but my two favourites are:

"Dude, you're a Ninja with a light kit." "Timmer," a sound technician at a recording studio.

"You're a lot better than I thought you'd be." Our new neighbour, Cindy, during a gallery opening.

Why I like the SWPP: I've only been to one SWPP convention, but the people I've met were fantastic. Dedicated, and in love with the business, they struck me as true professionals willing to immerse themselves in education to improve their lives and businesses. They are all to be commended.

Tagline: A photographer of subtlety and wit.

Future plans: I've written a number of books about photography, gear and lighting, and I expect a few more before my fingers freeze up. As I get older and look to phase out my career and relax a bit, I would like to create a fictional character that understands photography as a character in a book or movie script. Beyond that, I'm waiting for my early morning dreams to tell me where to go.

I've totally loved what I've done with my professional life and don't want to quit, but I also completely understand the "changing of the guard" that each generation must go through to give the next a leg up. I'd like to continue to educate those who want to learn and who want to take advantage of the knowledge I've acquired, and I'm completely willing to teach everything I know to them. They, the young shooters, are the future of this industry, and they must survive as both businesspeople and artists, elevating our profession to new levels unattainable by the hobby shooter, even one with a modicum of knowledge and the newest gear. Frankly, I believe their greatest hope is to build on sound knowledge, tricks and tips from photographers who've already been "there," to produce photographs that transcend the mainstream, middle of the road, images the public is continually bombarded with, transforming contemporary ideas into a controlled environment that creatively reflects current styles and trends.

And finally: Only that I really enjoy all of you and would like to continue to be a part of your efforts.
