Past careers in United Kingdom

1975 - 1992 Photographer – William Long
(Performed in conjunction with other roles)

Freelance Photography for performing arts companies, productions, individuals.

I started my photographic career in the one area I’d literally grown up with - ballet. Within the first few months of shooting my first film in my first camera - a Nikkormat, I was selling my work to Scottish Ballet. The following year I received the first of many commissions to photograph the company’s repertoire. In a short time, word spread, and I was approached by other performing arts companies in Scotland, Scottish Opera, Scottish Orchestra, Citizens Theatre, Mayfest and the prestigious Edinburgh Festival. The invitations to shoot for performing arts companies arrived from further a field. By the time I’d left for Australia, I was regarded as one of the UK’s leading dance photographers. My work was heavily featured in a United Kingdom Arts Council travelling photographic exhibition – a retrospective of dance photography from the introduction of photography to the present day. I’d photographed for over 120 performing arts companies from all over the world. During the late 1980’s I travelled to Europe and the US to shoot for resident performing arts companies, including the Wooster Group (Willem Defoe) and American Ballet Theatre.

In the late 80’s early 90’s I began to gain work from other areas that included Advertising agencies, graphic designers, and various other direct clients in the commercial and advertising fields.

1988 - 1992 ASAP Productions – William Long
(Performed in conjunction with other roles)

Photography, Publicity, Marketing, Sponsorship freelance consultancy formed in June 1988, to include all areas of my experience.

Apart from photographic work, Major 91 - 92 projects included:
Dinosaurs Alive National Tour Press & Publicity
Rocky Horror Show Scottish Tour Press & Publicity
Persistent Vision (Animated Film Company) Sponsorship & PR

May 1989 - May 1991 Tramway Press & Marketing Manager

I was required to produce and develop everything from scratch, as this was a new initiative by Glasgow City Council. I was required to produce a cohesive marketing strategy, which would demonstrate Tramway as both a performance, and visual arts venue. I introduced a unique marketing strategy, which incorporated a distinctive style for all print, media and merchandise.

I was responsible for the; production and management of all print, design, publicity and distribution; planning and controlling the Tramway publicity and marketing budgets; advising and implementing a complete computer installation; product development of all promotional merchandise sales; managing permanent, temporary and freelance staff associated with the press and marketing departments; liaising, negotiating, and mediating with all funding bodies, sponsors, visiting companies and artists; creating and implementing selective mailing lists for press, media, and VIPs.

June - Aug 1988 Crusaid Strathclyde – Freelance Producer/Director

One day event, in aid of Crusaid (a National Aids charity), involving 15 musical groups, 120 performers, plus technical staff and various support teams. Funds raised exceeded 15,500 sterling.

March - June 1988 Mayfest - Promotions Manager

Responsibilities included: managing promotional initiatives and merchandise sales, organising promotional displays; arranging press invitations to over 200 separate performances; and archiving press cuttings and programmes for the Festival.

March - June 1988 Scottish Ballet - Sponsorship Officer
(worked on freelance basis - at the same time as holding Mayfest Promotions Manager Position)

My set task was to increase the number of Corporate Subscription members. There were 3 members when I started, within three months I increased that figure to 25. I also devised and produced a major fund raising event producing over 50,000 sterling.

Jan - March 1988 The Royal Gala - Sole Organiser, Producer/Director

Royal Charity Gala 13th March 1988. This was my own initiative. Funds raised 84,500.
Responsibilities included: sole organisation and artistic direction of the event; procuring the attendance of HRH Princess Margaret, being host to HRH, liaising with Kensington Palace, Special Branch, Lord Provost’s Office, CID, to coordinate the royal visit; procuring sponsorship in-kind for the event (14,500), monetary sponsorship (25,000), sponsorship in-kind for The Scottish Ballet (30,000), box office and merchandise income (15,500); procuring services and scheduling all performers, technicians, support teams; producing and directing the entire event, including after performance hospitality for over 200 performers and technical staff.

1975 - 88 The Scottish Ballet - Principal Dancer

During my 13 year career with the Scottish Ballet, I danced and created many of the leading roles within the company’s repertoire. As a guest artist, I also danced with various European companies. It was a great honour to be personally invited to dance for the Prince and Princess of Wales on two occasions (1985 & 87). I choreographed seven ballets, while I was with the company. We toured across the world, and while touring abroad, we were expected to act as ambassadors of our country. While internationally touring, we were often guests of the British Council and subsequently introduced to many world leaders and royalty of hosting countries. While national touring, it was quite normal to meet many leading figures of industry who as sponsors would then introduce their guests, ranging from members of the Royal family to Heads of State and politicians.

1973 - 75 Northern Ballet - Soloist Dancer

Current Photographic Industry Positions – Voluntary

• AIPP National Photographic Competitions Coordinator.

I offered to tackle, what I observed to be a growing problem; the increasing number of photographic competitions that included suspect or deeply unfair (to the entrant) terms and conditions. There is a huge increase in the number of promotions/competitions, that are thinly disguised copyright “grabs”. I carefully check terms and conditions of the competitions on offer, and if I identify a questionable term or condition, I contact the organiser, and ask if they would be prepared to adapt the term or condition, to something that would be deemed more fair. This direct approach has led state governments, charities, independent organisations and photographic manufacturers to either change or evolve their terms and conditions to produce something much fairer for the entrant

In the situation where a questionable competition is being supported by a photographic manufacturer, I will approach them direct, and ask them to not support it, or be more aware of the entrants in future competitions. Companies, such as Canon and Fuji, have responded extremely well, and now forward competitions terms and conditions to me for approval, before they offer their support/backing to the competition.

After a number of years of quietly doing this in the background, I offered AIPP my time to do this for every competition that was submitted to AIPP’s national office. There are so many competitions submitted to AIPP, that on average, I can be asked to review the terms and conditions of competitions up to four times a week. Only those that are approved make it to the regular National AIPP email newsletter.

• APDIG Australian Photographic Digital Guidelines (co author).

I started commercially using digital photography in 2000, and by 2002 was 100% digital. I recognised that the reason for clients’ hesitation to receive digital files in place of film, were previous poor experiences with the different ways photographers would supply digital files. By early 2004, I realised a set of suggested digital guidelines was required. I wasn’t the only one speaking about this issue on online discussion forums, and in November 2004 I was instrumental in forming what was to become the Australian Photographic Digital Guidelines. I assumed the initial role of manager of a group of seven founding members, which eventually became the five co-authors. We released our Version 1 of the Australian Photographic Digital Guidelines on 23rd December 2004 – less than four weeks after we formed our group. As far as I know, we were one of the first organisations in the world to produce a comprehensive and yet succinct set of digital image guidelines. In 2005, the name was formalised to become APDIG to broaden industry endorsement. It is now endorsed by:

AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) ACMP (Association of Australian Commercial + Media Photographers) PICA (Photo Imaging Council of Australia) APCI (Association of Professional Color Imagers)

• AIPP Commercial Photographers Advisory Group - founding member.

• Contributor to Innovative Business Skills Australia IBSA – member of the reference group; re Certificate 4 in Photo-imaging and Diploma of Photo-imaging.
• Advisory panel for Taffe Qld diploma curriculum; re Qld Diploma of Photo-imaging qualification.
• Australianphotographers.net – Founder, Moderator, Owner. Future discussion forum and suppliers links page – still in progress.
• AIPP Forum Moderator
• ACMP Forum Moderator

Previous Photographic Industry Positions – Voluntary

Since 1993 I have always taken an active role within both AIPP and ACMP, these have included the following positions.

• Vice National President AIPP
• Vice National President ACMP
• State President of Qld Division of AIPP

Whilst AIPP State President, I introduced various initiatives, one of them was to convince Canon to become the naming sponsor of a relaunched Qld Professional Photographic Awards in 1999. Canon had had a long term arrangement with WA and hadn’t considered venturing further. The arrangement became a stepping stone for Canon to become AIPP’s major national sponsor. After lengthy discussions with Brisbane City Council I also considerably raised AIPP’s state profile by successfully linking the QPPA’s to the Brisbane Lord Mayors Photographic Competition.

• Qld Division AIPP council member for eight years
• National AIPP APPA Judge & Deputy Chairman of Jurors APPA
• Vice President AIPP Qld Division
• Director - Leads Club – Brisbane
• President ACMP Qld Division
• APPA 97 (Brisbane) Local Organiser
• APPA committee member

Charity Support

I’ve always believed in supporting charitable causes where and when I can.

Since 1998 I’ve donated my photographic creativity, services and materials to the following charities:

• Lifeline
• SIDS – Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
• Prince Charles Hospital – Brisbane
• Matt Stanley Foundation
• Young Womens Christian Association

In 2008 I will be supporting, by donating my work, to the following organisations:
