Greg Preston has an Exhibition here. Type business: Full Time Professional Photographer My photographic style: I am primarily a Commercial/Advertising Photographer. My greatest strengths: I am a very good communicator, and enjoy working with both talent and clients. Because I moved to Las Vegas at the beginning of the boom here, I had to be a "Jack of All Trades". My studio is very versatile because we shoot everything that a resort community needs: food, people, architecture, gaming etc. I have been in photography: I've been a professional photographer for 25 years (Wow! that seems like a long time...) How I got started in photography: I went to college at the University of Nevada Las Vegas for my first two years as a Fine Arts major, thinking that I wanted to be an Illustrator. After two years at UNLV one of my instructors pulled me aside and said that I had a very commercial eye, and should consider a school that wasn't a fine art school. Well, at the time I didn't really know how to proceed, so I signed up at the Community College thinking that I would try Graphic Design. I bought a camera, an Olympus OM1, to shoot reference photos for my illustrations that year. After that I think my fate was sealed; I graduated with a degree in Graphic Design, and then moved to LA to study photography at The Art Centre College of Design. My photographic skills: I can light anything. Really fast, and really well. If I can determine the emotional message a shot is supposed to have, I can make that happen with light as a key element. I have over time become an excellent manager of a crew of people, and can move a shot forward and solve most problems quickly. My personality: I am actually a little goofy, love to laugh and get to know people, and am probably a little A.D.D. when I am off set. Geographic areas I cover: While I am based in Las Vegas, Nevada, We have photographed pretty much all over the U.S. Venues I frequently attend: I love to do outdoor areas at beautiful resorts. That said, It is UNBELIEVABLY hot here in July and August, and no amount of money is worth toiling in that heat. I found inspiration from: Actually, I've gone through a lot of different phases in my career. I have been influenced by so many different photographers and illustrators: Annie Leibovitz, Mark Seliger, Albert Watson, Andrew Eccles, John Singer Sargent, Norman Rockwell, and Frank Frazetta, to name a few. I really love great editorial photography. Actually, I think I'm influenced by so much I don't think I'll ever loose my admiration for really good art. Most recently, I've been looking at the photography of Joe McNally. Success in photography: When I was a student at Art Centre, I won the Grand Prize for the "Dr. Pepper Most Unusual Photo Contest". My wife and I got a wonderful trip to Africa as the prize for that. Most recently, I have won several awards for my photography book, "The Artist Within". This book is the culmination of fifteen years of photographing Artists and Illustrators in their studios. Also, My partner, Sharon Sampsel, and I have won a bunch of industry awards over the twenty+ years we've been in business in Las Vegas. At some point, we actually stopped entering the local contests (like the Addy's), because we ran out of shelf space and the darned statues got so expensive to buy. Photographic training: I have a graphic design degree, and a BFA in Advertising Photography from Art Centre College of Design, Pasadena, CA campus. I also have a certificate in Photoshop, and have taken classes in teaching. My interests outside photography: My guilty pleasure is my love of Comic Books and Graphic Novels. For 35 years, I have sojourned down to the mammoth Comic-Con in San Diego, California to be amongst everything new and exciting in this world. I take my teenage boys, and we have a wonderful time. Major events: This last year I started teaching locally again, something I haven't done since I first got out of school and needed to supplement my income. I have thoroughly enjoyed giving back to the next generation of Photographers, and at the same time, get to view the world through their eyes. Testimonials: How Many? Why I like the SWPP: Brand new to them, I'll tell you when I visit in January! Tagline: Done Right Every Time. Future plans: I am currently working on my second book, the companion volume to "The Artist Within". I should have that published by the end of 2010. Also, my wife and I are in the process of looking for retirement land in the Pacific Northwest, and that is exciting. We talk a lot about how to keep doing "Photographic Special Projects" going in our life, because even still, we really love being photographers. And finally: I haven't been to England since I graduated from Art Centre, and am greatly looking forward to it.
