What is it?
Artsafe 200 is a very special, high quality, buffered, acid free, non‐yellowing, stable & safe adhesive for mounting your most treasured giclee prints, posters, photo, fine art, prints, clippings, etc. Artsafe 200 was first developed in conjunction with the British Library having approved it for use in restoration & archive work at the British Library, the Bibliotech Nationale & the Dutch National archive.
This product has now been in use for over 25 years at these
institutions, simulated age testing has shown it to withstand 200 year
ageing without degradation. Activation temperatures are very low, for
extra safety on fragile items, with 70‐75o C (160F) being set as a
standard working temperature. Further testing has shown that the product
will activate as low as 60 °C (140F) if required.
Method of Use
Artsafe 200 tissue is supplied on a special “carrier release” paper. For
smaller work pieces the tissue can be removed from the release liner and
placed between the mount board (archival recommended) and the print.
Cover any exposed adhesive with Clear Silicone Release Film.
For larger oversized prints, a two step process is recommended.
Simply cut a piece of tissue to your chosen size & place it face down on
your board. Press at full pressure & at the desired temperature for
approximately 1 minute, before removing your board from the press
allowing it to thoroughly cool down. The “carrier release” paper can now
be removed to expose the heat sensitive tissue.
Carefully place the artwork on the tissue & cover with clear silicone
release film. Repress the assembly under heat & pressure for between 1
to 4 minutes – dependant on artwork size & board type.
Reversibility
Artsafe 200 can be reversed, even after ageing, by careful use of
Industrial Methylated Sprit (IMS). Care should always be taken when
delaminating documents with suspect spirit based inks and this may be
best left to experts. For temporary display purposes as well as
irreplaceable or high value works of art, hinging and other archival
display techniques may merit consideration.
