Focusing Ring

SWPP Photographic Glossary

The focusing ring is the part of a camera lens used to adjust focus so that the subject appears sharp on the film or digital sensor (CCD/CMOS). Rotating the ring moves lens elements to achieve precise focus, allowing photographers to control image clarity manually.

Most modern cameras feature automatic focus (AF), while some allow manual focus override (MF) for greater control. Fixed-focus (F) lenses maintain relative sharpness from around 1.5 meters to infinity, and certain models include power focus (PF), which uses a motorised focusing ring for smoother manual adjustments. Lenses with well-designed rings that offer a good grip make manual focusing easier and more accurate, which is particularly useful in macro, portrait, and technical photography.
