Gaussian Blur

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Gaussian blur is an image-editing technique that diffuses an image using a bell-shaped mathematical curve to calculate which pixels will be blurred. Unlike uniform blurring, this method creates a smoother, more natural effect that avoids a harsh or overly “processed” appearance.

Commonly used in digital photography, graphic design, and retouching, Gaussian blur helps reduce noise, soften edges, and create depth-of-field effects. Understanding this technique allows photographers and editors to enhance images subtly, maintaining visual realism while achieving creative or corrective results.
